Windows

I have installed windows of every shape, size, and material, and from every manufacturer.

My extensive window installation experience has shown me that the cost of a window is directly proportional to the quality of that window. If you buy a low-cost vinyl window, you will get a cheaply-made window. The good news is that you don’t have to break the bank to get a good, efficient window. All Energy Star windows are independently rated by the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC). A label comes attached to each window so that you know exactly what you’re getting.

Before I install any window, I read the manufacturer’s instructions.

This is extremely important because a window's warranty could be voided if it is installed improperly. Every window manufacturer has specific directions for nail placement and spacing, insulation to be used, and flashing installation. Usually, the manufacturer requires a bead of silicone around the flange to keep air and moisture from escaping or entering your home. You certainly don't want to air condition the whole neighborhood! I will properly level and plumb each window in the opening, making sure that the window fits well. Properly installed windows should open and close smoothly and easily.

Insulation is crucial in any climate.

When replacing windows, I have often found that the original windows were not insulated. I can only imagine that the original installer did not think that this was worth his time. It is always worth my time to do the job right from start to finish. Proper insulation will increase your home's energy efficiency.

The recent rise in heating and cooling costs has brought many ads for replacement windows and for very low-cost vinyl windows. Don’t be fooled! These windows are often low quality windows sold and installed by someone who will disappear after installation, leaving you high and dry when your windows begin to warp and twist after a year. I wouldn’t install cheap windows in your home any more than I would in my own.
